A generic POS is excellent at one thing: selling goods. Scan, total, print, done. If your shop purely sells, a general-purpose POS is genuinely enough — no need to replace it.
But a repair shop holds something a sales register has never heard of: property that belongs to someone else. A customer’s car parked overnight, a motorcycle waiting on a part, a phone left on the bench. - Work in progress — the queue, which mechanic or technician has it, work records, changing statuses.
- Warranty & hand-back — proof of handover and a warranty clock that starts running.
- Repair returns — different from retail returns, because labor and already-fitted parts are involved.
- Self-serve tracking — customers checking status themselves instead of calling twice a day.
“Repair features bolted on” ≠ born from the repair workflow
Repair features added as an afterthought usually look fine until the day goes badly: a return on a half-paid invoice, a part that must deduct stock at the cost it was actually bought for, or a mechanic’s share computed from recorded work. Systems born from repair work treat these as the core; a register with repair stickers tends to shrug and tell the cashier to “sort it out manually.”
